Tonnara di Scopello Wedding: History, Costs and Practical Planning

Words and photographs by Daniele Pullara

Tonnara di Scopello sits on a narrow stretch of coastline below the village of Scopello, between rock, sea and the limestone hills of western Sicily.

The sea stacks are its most recognisable feature, but they explain only part of the place.

The buildings were shaped by centuries of tuna fishing. Warehouses, fishermen’s houses, courtyards, boat storage areas and passages were built at different times and for different purposes. The result is very different from a villa later converted into a wedding venue.

Today the historic complex is used for accommodation and private events. For a Tonnara di Scopello wedding, this layout is particularly relevant because part of the guest list can stay inside the property while the ceremony, dinner and other events take place across different areas of the same site.

Before weddings, there was the tuna fishery

The oldest part of the complex is the Marfaggio, where boats were stored. Its origins date to around the thirteenth century.

Between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries further buildings were added, contributing to the formation of the baglio. The property later passed to the Jesuits, who worked on the small church, the boat warehouses and the buildings used to accommodate fishermen.

In 1874 the Florio family and other families acquired the Tonnara at public auction. Under the Florios the fishing operation was developed further and the Palazzina Florio was built for administrative use. (Tonnara di Scopello)

The importance of that history becomes clearer when the complex is seen as a whole. These buildings were built around work, boats and the sea. Their proportions and position along the coast still follow that logic.

The museum at the Tonnara preserves original boats, fishing equipment, ropes and spaces connected to the traditional mattanza. (Tonnara di Scopello)

The layout becomes clearer from above

At ground level, Tonnara di Scopello is experienced in fragments. A courtyard leads to a building, the building ends against rock, then the sea appears again a few metres later.

The top down aerial view gives a much clearer reading of the site.

The buildings occupy a surprisingly narrow strip between the hillside and the water. The rock repeatedly interrupts the geometry of the complex. Some spaces are enclosed by walls and buildings while others reach almost directly into the sea.

There is no single main building around which everything else is arranged. The Tonnara reveals itself gradually.

This also explains why photographs taken from the water can give a misleading sense of scale. The complex is compact when compared with the cliffs, mountains and coastline around it.

That relationship is one of the most distinctive features of the venue.

The historic residences and wedding spaces

There are fifteen residences inside the monumental complex. They occupy different parts of the property, including the Palazzina Florio, Sotto la Torre, the Taverne and the former fishermen’s houses known as the Vicarie. (Tonnara di Scopello)

For weddings and private events, different areas can be used throughout the day. The property specifically mentions the baglio and terrace among the available spaces. (Tonnara di Scopello)

The distances are short, but the character of each area changes quickly. One part is defined by stone buildings and enclosed courtyards; a few steps away the view opens completely towards the Mediterranean.

For a destination wedding in Sicily, this makes it possible to move from one part of the event to another without transferring guests to a different venue.

The number of guests still matters. The same courtyard feels very different with sixty people or two hundred, and that should be considered before deciding how each part of the property will be used.

How much does a Tonnara di Scopello wedding cost in 2027?

There is currently no complete public 2027 price list available online.

One couple who states that they have already booked Tonnara di Scopello for 2027 reported a price of around €72,000 for a three night weekend during mid season, from Friday to Monday. The same source mentioned approximately €40,000 for a two night weekday booking.

These figures are useful as a current indication of price, but they should not be treated as an official published rate and need to be confirmed directly with the venue. (Reddit)

The latest complete publicly available pricing is for 2026:

PeriodWeekend, 3 nightsMidweek, 2 nights
High season, 1 June to 27 September€85,000€55,000
Mid season€63,750€33,000
Low season€42,500€24,000

Those rates included exclusive use of the property, accommodation for up to 55 guests in the fifteen historic residences, breakfast for resident guests, daily housekeeping and 24 hour security. (La Lista)

Catering, wedding planning, flowers, furniture, production, music, photography, film and guest transport sit outside that figure.

This is worth understanding before comparing Tonnara di Scopello with other Sicily wedding venues. The venue fee covers several nights of exclusive use and accommodation for part of the guest list. It is not the total wedding budget.

Three nights for a weekend wedding

The 2026 terms required a minimum stay of three nights for weekend bookings, covering Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Midweek bookings required a minimum of two nights. (La Lista)

For an international wedding, the format makes sense.

Guests arriving from the United States, the UK or elsewhere in Europe do not all have to arrive a few hours before the ceremony and leave the following morning. Friday can be used for arrivals and dinner. Saturday remains the wedding day. Sunday can be kept for lunch, swimming or simply time together before people begin to leave.

The venue is already being rented for several days, so the wedding can use that time instead of compressing everything into a single schedule.

How many guests can stay at Tonnara di Scopello?

The fifteen historic residences can accommodate up to 55 guests. (La Lista)

For a small Tonnara di Scopello wedding, that can mean having most of the group inside the property.

For a wedding of one hundred, one hundred and fifty or two hundred guests, accommodation needs to extend into Scopello and Castellammare del Golfo.

Transport then becomes part of the event planning rather than a minor detail.

Guest arrivals, shuttle departure times and transport after the party need to be coordinated with the wedding schedule. This matters even more when a large percentage of the guest list is unfamiliar with the area.

Tonnara di Scopello is approximately 52 kilometres from both Palermo Airport and Trapani Birgi Airport, and the property can arrange transfer services. (Tonnara di Scopello)

Wedding capacity

Published information gives Tonnara di Scopello a capacity of up to 300 seated guests outdoors.

Indoor capacity is considerably smaller, at approximately 80 to 100 guests across two adjoining rooms. (La Lista)

That difference is important for larger weddings.

A seventy guest event and a two hundred guest event may both work comfortably outside, but they require very different solutions if the weather changes.

For a larger destination wedding, the wet weather configuration should be discussed with the venue and planner before the guest count and production are finalised.

The coastline is exposed and the historic layout leaves less room for improvised solutions than a property with a large open lawn.

Civil or symbolic ceremony

Current published venue information states that a civil ceremony is not held on site. (La Lista)

Because this is an administrative matter, couples planning a future Tonnara di Scopello wedding should confirm the current situation directly with the venue and the relevant local authority.

A symbolic ceremony does not have the same legal restrictions and allows considerably more freedom in deciding how the space is used.

Sunset at Tonnara di Scopello

This is one detail that photographs of Scopello do not always make obvious.

Looking out towards the Mediterranean and the sea stacks, it would be easy to assume that the evening sun drops directly into the sea in front of the Tonnara.

It does not.

From the property, the sun is hidden by the mountains behind Scopello before it reaches the visible sea horizon.

For couples specifically looking for photographs with the sun itself setting over the water, Tonnara di Scopello does not offer that typical west facing sunset view.

The light changes earlier.

Once the sun disappears behind the ridge, the buildings move into shade while the sea and sky remain bright. Contrast across the stone begins to fall and the entire bay becomes more even in tone.

The exact time depends on the date.

For wedding planning, the useful information is therefore not simply the official sunset time. It is the time at which the mountain will begin to block direct sunlight from the Tonnara.

That difference can affect the ceremony, aperitivo and dinner schedule, particularly during the summer months.

Tonnara di Scopello and the surrounding landscape

Seen from the water, the Tonnara can appear almost detached from everything behind it.

The wider aerial views tell a different story.

The land rises quickly towards the village of Scopello. Historic towers emerge from the limestone rock and the mountains occupy a significant part of the horizon.

The buildings of the Tonnara remain relatively small inside this larger landscape.

This matters when thinking about the design of a wedding here. The existing architecture already has strong materials, proportions and colours. The coast is equally present.

There is no neutral space waiting to be given an identity.

The most convincing setups tend to start by understanding what is already there.

Why a multi day wedding makes sense here

The combination of exclusive use, fifteen residences and a minimum stay over the weekend naturally suits a multi day destination wedding in Sicily.

Part of the guest list can remain inside the Tonnara while other guests stay nearby. The property can then be used differently across several days rather than being prepared for one reception and emptied a few hours later.

The first evening may simply be dinner.

The wedding day has its own schedule.

The following morning can remain almost entirely unstructured.

For couples bringing friends and family to Sicily from different countries, this is where the cost of the venue begins to make more sense. A significant part of the price is paying for time and exclusive use of the complex, not simply for a dinner setting.

Couples who only need a coastal venue for a few hours can find very different options elsewhere in Sicily.

Tonnara di Scopello belongs to another type of event.

What to confirm before booking Tonnara di Scopello

For 2027, publicly available pricing remains incomplete. The final rate for a specific date, availability, minimum stay and event conditions should therefore be confirmed directly with the property.

For larger weddings, indoor capacity and the wet weather setup deserve the same attention. Couples planning a legal civil ceremony should also confirm the current rules before finalising the ceremony plan.

Rates and venue conditions can change from one season to the next.
